ntl:Telewest has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) as a technology and services partner to help with developments to its telephone network using VoIP technology. ntl:Telewest is the UK's largest cable operator and a leading UK provider of broadband and communications services.

A 5-year agreement has been signed by the two companies. The initial phase of the agreement is to help build a Residential Voice-over-Broadband service utilising the Ericsson IMS platform which has been installed and is undergoing testing ahead of launch.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will also be involved with upgrading ntl:Telewest voice network from circuit-switched technology to IP using Ericsson's IP-based Telephony Softswitch solution. Planning for the network transformation is currently underway and will involve the migration of circuits across the network from TDM to IP thus utilizing the current IP network more effectively and producing cost savings through out the network.

Jacqueline Hey, managing director for Ericsson in the UK, said: "NTL is already seeing the benefits from its investment in its network. We are delighted to have concluded this agreement which will see Ericsson technology introduced that will provide gains in both network running costs and efficiency."

"Ericsson's advanced IP Softswitch and IMS architecture products will allow NTL to create new IP-based services for its wide range of business and residential customers," Hey added.

Netwise develops and markets software within the growing areas of presence management, team collaboration, integration of mobile phones, IP telephony and multimedia. The company has about 2000 customers in around 20 countries and is a leading supplier in Northern Europe with subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany and France.

Ericsson sees a growing market for new advanced enterprise solutions based on IP, mobility and convergence; applications that can unify these domains are crucial for modern companies. It already has a strong offering in this market and sees an opportunity to further strengthen its offering to the enterprise segment with Netwise's competence and solutions.

Netwise has a strong application offering in the contact management area based on presence and availability management, addressing both customer premises equipment and operator enterprise solutions.

Netwise's solutions support a variety of infrastructures - such as PBXs from different vendors - and can be deployed in service providers' mobile Centrex offerings as well as in PBX solutions owned by enterprises themselves. Netwise is highly competent at selling complex communication solutions in multi-vendor IP environments.

Urban Gillström head of Business Unit Enterprise, says: "We see clear opportunities in combining Netwise's cutting-edge IP competence and applications for the enterprise segment with our global presence. Ericsson and Netwise are already partners today and there are advantages to both parties in taking this next step."

Netwise Board Chairman Yngve Andersson says: "Netwise is proud to have received this offer from Ericsson. We see this as a confirmation that, with our highly competent employees, we have succeeded in developing competitive products as well as positioning them in an international market. Through Ericsson, Netwise now has the opportunity to reach the international market even faster."

Ericsson sees Netwise as further strengthening its existing offering and being an important element in its end-user application program as part of its mobile enterprise strategy. The acquisition of Netwise supports Ericsson's portfolio strategy.

The acquisition requires approval from Netwise shareholders; so far Ericsson has approval from the main shareholders, together holding approximately 70 per cent of the share capital and 76 per cent of the voting rights in Netwise. The Netwise board has also resolved unanimously to recommend that the company's shareholders and holders of warrants accept the offer. The acquisition is subject to clearance from the relevant competition and other regulatory authorities.

Once the deal is approved, a project will be established for the integration into Ericsson and a project team will be assigned.

Under the contract with Global Crossing, Ericsson will provide the CPS with managed telephony services to more than 100 main sites across England and Wales, including its head quarters based in London, York and Birmingham, and numerous smaller offices. The CPS is the UK government department responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by the police in England and Wales. Created by the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985, the CPS is an independent body that works closely with the police.

Jon Smith, Head of New Business KAM, said "This is a major step into managed services for Ericsson Enterprise in the UK and one of the best Enterprise managed services for voice telephony in the UK to win and once again demonstrates the strength of our relationship with Global Crossing."

John Whelan, director of Marketing, Ericsson Enterprise North America, says "This is a very valuable award, as the ICCM trade show is one of the most respected in the contact-center industry with attendees from North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia,"

"The agent application is one of the most important buying criteria and we are delighted that we can highlight this award in tenders and customer and partner newsletters," he says.

Naval Sodha, director of Product Management for Contact Center Products, accepted the award on behalf of the Ericsson team at the Bellagio Hotel ceremony.

Sodha believes Solidus eCare's focus on mobility, with preparation for IMS Integration and Presence support in the coming release, was the key to winning the award.

"What sets Solidus eCare apart and gives it the competitive edge is the support for mobility, where it applies to both contact center agents and customers.

"In some emerging markets, up to 90 percent of consumers use mobile phones only for communications, so it is essential that a contact center solution can, for example, allow a customer to switch at any time between SMS and voice or other forms of communication," he says.

Questex Media Group Show Director Christina Condos says the awards recognize products or services likely to have "the most significant impact" on the contact center and customer-relations industries.

"We feel this year's winners are truly at the forefront of innovation and ingenuity," she says.
